Parathyroid cysts: diagnosis and treatment

Parathyroid cysts are rare lesions, usually located in the neck and mediastinum in about 10% of the cases, predominantly in women. The majority of the lesions are nonfunctioning; however, functioning cysts are associated with hyperparathyroidism. The diagnosis of parathyroid cyst is difficult, and frequently misdiagnosed as thyroid pathology and the final diagnosis is made during surgery confirmed by histopathological examination. A crystal clear fluid and elevated PTH levels in cyst fluid confirm the diagnosis.
