Laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty: Comparative analisys of the clinical improvement and the indication criteria

Introduction: The snoring and mild obstructive sleep apnea may be treated with LAUP; the results are directly related with the criteria adopted to select the patients. The objective of the authors is to analyze this criterion and to compare with the post cirurgical results. Study design: Clinical prospective randomized. Material and Method: 44 patients with primary snoring and mild obstructive sleep apnea were selected and evaluated clinically, with Epworth scale and Stanford scales. Results: A one-month post-cirurgical evaluation was made with clinical improvement of 76%, the Epworth scale had a reduction of 70%, the Stanford snoring scale of 75% and somnolence 75%. Utilizing the Epworth scale (above 12) polissonography was done in 12 patients (27%); in 9 patients (75%) the result was mild obstructive sleep apnea. Conclusions: The quality of the results depends of the exclusion of the patients with more intensity of obstructive sleep apnea and central diseases, what was obtained with the Epworth scale and confirmed with polissonography. The evaluated scales accompanied the clinical improvement.
