Back to the future: the Brazilian Journal of Psychiatry embraces change and innovation

This editorial marks the inauguration of Prof. Dr. Andre R. Brunoni as the newly appointed Co-Editor in Chief of the Brazilian Journal of Psychiatry (BJP), joining his esteemed colleague Prof. Dr. Antonio Egidio Nardi. He steps into the role previously held by Prof. Dr. João Quevedo, whose exemplary leadership and dedication have significantly advanced our journal.

Over the past decade, the BJP has undergone transformational changes. We rebranded from Revista Brasileira de Psiquiatria to Brazilian Journal of Psychiatry, a move that symbolizes our commitment to global discourse in psychiatric research.11. Quevedo J, Nardi AE, da Silva AG. Brazilian Journal of Psychiatry. Braz J Psychiatry. 2019;41:1-2. Our indexing in the Medline/PubMed and ISI were landmark achievements, reflecting our scientific rigor and relevance.22. Revista Brasileira de Psiquiatria chega finalmente ao Medline. We expanded our publication frequency to six volumes annually to accommodate the increasing influx of high-quality research.11. Quevedo J, Nardi AE, da Silva AG. Brazilian Journal of Psychiatry. Brazilian Journal of Psychiatry sustains its remarkable growth in 2023. Braz J Psychiatry. 2023;45:303.

As we look ahead, our journey of innovation continues robustly into 2024 and beyond. Embracing the digital era, the BJP will transition to an exclusively online format. This strategic move not only aligns us with contemporary publishing trends but also underscores our commitment to environmental sustainability and wider accessibility. Other changes include: 1) the Letter to the Editors category of submissions will be formally expanded to accept an unlimited number of authors, up to 1,500 words, and one table or figure; 2) Editorials on strategic topics, including groundbreaking advancements in psychiatry research, controversial topics, and critical commentary on articles published in BJP will be encouraged; and 3) Special Articles on the above-mentioned topics, authored by leaders in the field, will also be incentivized.

In this new moment, our goal, shared between the editors-in-chief, is to build upon these foundations while steering the BJP towards pioneering frontiers in psychiatric research. We remain steadfast in our vision to establish the BJP as a flagship psychiatry journal, both nationally and internationally. Honoring the legacy of the past while looking forward to a future brimming with possibilities, we are ready to navigate the exciting and evolving landscape of psychiatric research and publication.
