INTRODUCION/OBJECTIVE: We describe the translation into Portuguese and the adaptation of the Binge Eating Scale (BES) - a scale to assess binge eating severity in obese individuals. The objective was to translate, adapt and evaluate the applicability of the Portuguese BES version. METHODS: A final Portuguese BES version was obtained after a careful translation and adaptation process. To verify the applicability of the instrument, a pre-test was conducted in a group of 32 obese patients with binge eating disorder (BED) seeking treatment for obesity. RESULTS: All BES items were well understood and the mean BES scores of the obese binge eaters sample was 31,2 (±5,8). CONCLUSION: The Portuguese final version of BES was considered suitable for clinical purposes.
