RBP starts using online manuscript management

EDITORS' NOTE

RBP starts using online manuscript management

Since August 1stRevista Brasileira de Psiquiatra (RBP) is receiving manuscript submissions via the SciELO publication system, which uses the Open Journal Systems (http://pkp.sfu.ca) to support the management and publication of online journals. The system includes all procedures related to the journals, from submission to publication on the SciELO collections, and uses the Document Type Definition (DTD) of Pubmed Central (http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/) to format the manuscripts. The system also allows for the management of the journals' data, issues and manuscripts by creating XML files, which is a requirement of Pubmed Central. Such file format offers the possibility of streamlined publication on Pubmed and SciELO.

The online submission tool aims at reducing the time spent with tasks related to management, editing and maintenance of the editorial processes. It is also intended to improve the tasks performed by authors, reviewers and editors related to the submission of manuscripts and their publication, providing greater transparency to the editorial process.

Since it is a web-based software, it offers decentralized access, and the researchers can have different user profiles according to the role each one plays in the system (e.g.: author and reviewer). Anyone can register in the system either as an author or a reviewer. One hundred and fifty reviewers have already registered according to their respective areas of interest. RBP welcomes more researchers, especially the young ones, in order to increase the group of reviewers. The system is user-friendly and will be very useful for authors and reviewers, who will be able to control all the steps of manuscript submissions on the web.

Similarly to what happens with the international journals, the online submission tool of RBP will eliminate the need for reviewer-author blinding so that it will be possible for the reviewers to identify the authors of the manuscripts when they receive the studies for assessment; however, the reviewer's identity will remain confidential. This new system provides authors and reviewers with great efficiency and safety regarding data management and confidentiality. Therefore, we hope to improve the quality and increase the efficiency of the manuscript review process of RBP.

The journals' online management has speeded up the manuscript review process. By implementing this system, RBP is following an international trend and takes another step towards improving its editorial processes. Our journal is one of the first journals of the SciELO collection to use this publication system that can be accesses at http://submission.scielo.br/index.php/rbp/login.
