Based on an interview with a trade union leader, on American newpapers articles published in Washington, D.C. and on other bibliographical sources, the article analyzes the trends followed during the last years by the American Civil Society organizations, specially the trade unions confederations. In order to defend the American workers of the treats linked to globalization, economic regionalism - specially the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) - and technological progress, the American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) changed radically its strategies. Now, instead of fighting against the free trade agreements, it tries to limit the governmental autonomy into these negociations. At the same time, it promotes a greater articulation with Latin American trade unions confederations. This approximation favours the beginning of a new and hopeful "trade union internacional position".
