The article deals with matters related to the evolution of the Brazilian military thought between 1961 and 1989, in the field of international relations and foreign policy. It raises some shortcomings of the traditional critic interpretation and analyses the conception of international politics prevailing in the armed forces doctrine. It tries to point out, finally, distinguishing features which have marked the military thought on the subject, including their connection with the major historical trends in Brazilian diplomacy.
