OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to estimate the prevalence of overweight and obesity and verify its association with sociodemographic factors among hospital kitchen workers in public hospitals in Florianópolis, Brazil. METHODS: All the participants (200 workers) answered a structured questionnaire and had anthropometric (height and weight) measures taken. RESULTS: Workers' average BMI was 27,7 kg/m²; considered as overweight. Prevalence of excess weight (BMI > 25 kg/m²) was three times higher among women than men, independently of other factors. Other exposure variables were not associated with overweight among kitchen workers.
