The perception of hospitality in the city of Rio de Janeiro: perception of international tourists

Abstract

This article is part of the result of a doctoral thesis, presented and approved in 2020. The thesis included three complementary studies and used mixed research methods and different forms of analysis. In this presentation, we chose to focus specifically on the perception of hospitality in the city of Rio de Janeiro, regarding international tourist demand. In addition to verifying the opinion of tourists, the study aimed to identify categories of analysis with greater relevance about what the interviewees considered hospitality. The study, characterized as quantitative, with 388 respondents, adopted statistical analysis performed with the SPSS software version 25.0 for Windows. As a main result, it is noteworthy that indicators related to the local population are preponderant in the perception of hospitality. There is no relationship between the travel behavior of respondents and the assessment of hospitality. The indicators of the sociodemographic profile of the sample have little influence. The greater the recommendation intention of the tourist destination, the more positive the hospitality evaluation. It was observed that the perception of hospitality by international tourists is closer to the premises of the French approach than to the Anglo-Saxon one and was quite positive, with an average score, on a scale of 1 to 10, of 8.13.
