BACKGROUND: The authors describe their experience with the correction of large ostomy hernias. MEYHODS: Six patients, two males and four females, with a mean age of 60 years, with ostomy hernias larger than 10 cm, operated between 1982 and 1999. Two patients had parastomy hernia and four, peristomy. RESULTS: Three patients were operated by polypropylene mesh repair and with the permanence of stoma "in situ" while three removed the stoma and closed the hernia . There was no recurrence until now (4 patients having a follow-up of 5 years). CONCLUSIONS: The present techinique a good solution for the ostomal hernes, preventing recurrence.
