Transobturator sling: results of a center of urogynecology in Curitiba in the year 2004

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the transobturator sling used for the correction of urinary incontinence. METHODS: The cases of transobturator synthetic sling performed at the Evangelical Hospital of Curitiba in the year of 2004 were reviewed. The surgery consisted in the placement of a strip of polypropilene of 20X1,5cm, in the medium urethra, made manually starting from a screen of 20X20cm. RESULTS: The mean patients' age was of 51.4 years old. There were no intra-operative complications. In 47 patients, 91% were cured, while 9% presented urinary incontinence recurrence after six months. Two (4.25%) patients presented vaginal erosion. Four (N=47) patients presented urinary tract infection and a patient presented a posterior vaginal wall hematoma. CONCLUSION: The transobturator synthetic Sling is a simple and effective procedure for the correction of Stress Urinary Incontinence after six months of follow-up. The technique used in making of the sling was showed acceptable complication and recurrence rates comparable to those observed with the industrialized sling. Long term followup is required for the validation of this technique.
