PURPOSE:
to compare the performance of children with Specific Language Impairment and Typical Language Development in relation to phonologic memory, lexical access and phonologic awareness skills.
METHODS:
40 subjects (20 diagnosed with Impairment - Study Group and 20 without the same diagnosis - Control Group) from ages of 7 and 10 years old, both genders, paired according to chronological age and school grade level. It was applied: child's phonologic test ABFW; Non-words test of the Working Phonologic Memory test; Phonologic Skills Profile and Rapid Automatic Naming - RAN. Descriptive and inferential analyses have been made, making use of chi-squared test (significance lesser or equal than 0,05).
RESULTS:
there was statistical difference between the groups on the phonologic processing skill. The study group presented significantly worse performance in comparison with the control group. Only the rapid object naming has shown no significant statistical difference between groups.
CONCLUSION:
the vast majority of children suffering from SLI presented some change on the PP (Phonologic Processing), being the difference in the performance in comparison with children with TLD (Typical Language Development) statistically significant.
