Forest structure in settlement project, São Mateus community, municipality of Placas, Pará State, Brazil

The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential and forest structure of the Ombrophylous Dense Forest in the São Mateus Community, municipality of Placas, Pará State, Brazil. The evaluation was conducted in two types of environment, one in Management Forest (MF) and the other in a Non-Management Forest (NMF). Were allocated 20 sampling units, 9 in MF and 11 in NMF. At each sampling unit, individuals were surveyed in three size classes (SC): SC1 - 10 cm < DBH < 30 cm (50 m x 25 m); SC2 - 30 cm < DBH < 50 cm (50 m x 50 m) and SC3-DBH > 50 cm (50 m x 200 m). The uses of the species were verified through interviews with local people in trade fairs, businesses and in the municipal market in Santarém. Were sampled 472.6 trees per ha in MF, distributed in 134 species and 508.0 trees per ha in NMF, distributed in 146 species. The species of highest importance value in the two forest types were Licania kunthiana Hook. f. (Chrysobalanaceae) and Mezilaurus itauba Taubert ex Mez (Lauraceae). The species that stood out with different possibilities of use were Protium cf. heptaphyllum (Aubl.) Marchand (Burseraceae), Hymenaea courbaril L. (Fabaceae) and Caryocar villosum (Aubl.) Pers (Caryocaraceae). After four years of harvest, there was no structural differentiation between MF and NMF.
