Knowledge Universe: classification and categorization from the perspective of knowledge organization

ABSTRACT

Introduction:

Knowledge organization (CO) is one among many fields that attempt to play a proactive role in communication and knowledge exchange environments.

Objective:

Therefore, this study aims to outline, from a historical context, the theoretical and methodological interactions existing between the concepts of classification and categorization as processes of representing the universe of knowledge to achieve OC for different audiences, that is, from a Librarianship and CI perspective. Methodology: It is characterized as exploratory and descriptive research based on a bibliographical survey, materialized by a narrative literature review.

Results:

With the input obtained in this survey, we analyzed the theoretical foundations, characteristics, and relationships, discussed the universe of knowledge concerning KO, and distinguished, along the way, the concepts of classification and categorization.

Conclusion:

It was found that these two processes comprise part of the KO, with classification starting from the characteristics of an organization and finalizing with categorization focusing on the properties of an object or phenomenon.
