The legitimation of secular authority and the theorization of “civil desobedience” in reformist philosophy

Abstract

This article examines the most relevant theories during the Protestant Reformation on what is now known as civil disobedience. Focusing on the writings of Martin Luther and John Calvin, we are concerned about investigating how protestant theorization on the separation of faith and civil governance contributed to the conception of civil disobedience, that will have a strong relevance later on.
