Advocacy and emancipatory struggles: what is the politics in advocacy?

Abstract

It’s a study of what’s there of political in lawyer or about lawyer in emancipatory struggles. The objective is to explore more than technical performance of lawyer, with a comparate study at different moments of two Brazilian historical periods: in the Empire (1822-1889) and in the Republic (1889-). On the one hand, with official documents from the public archive on lawyer in the face of the abolicionist struggle of slavery of Brazilian Empire justice; On the other hand, with testimony of lawyers regarding the emancipatory struggles in the republican period. The issue of rights mobilization is worked out in dialogue with Charles Tilly and the ideas of collective action theory and contentions politics. The conclusion is that rights mobilization is a political use of law to social transformation.
