“Narcissus shies away from look-unlikes”: Thoughts on the Brazilian Exception in Narcissus Off Duty

Abstract

The article analyses the narrative mirroring of the documentary Narcissus Off Duty, in which Caetano Veloso relates his imprisonment by the Brazilian Civil-Military Dictatorship (1964-1985). Through the prism of an investigation on the relations between Law and Cinema, we conclude that the narratives mobilized in the movie bring to light the memory of the exception that characterizes our recent politico-juridical experience and allow us to identify its violent face in the mirror of representation.
