Abstract
Economic empowerment and enhanced consumption correlate with changes in the legal recognition of gender equality in Brazil. This essay employs categories that link capitalism to gender and to legal change in order to think about legal change regarding women’s rights and LGBT rights in Brazil, emphasizing the relationship between economic empowerment and the reversal of arbitrary social hierarchies inherited from the past.
