Borba Gato on fire: disputes for social memory, black and peripheral struggles in São Paulo.

Abstract

Discussions about symbolic damage to property and state memory versus the memory of black movements will be mobilized to study the struggles of the present time around an anti-racist memory in São Paulo. We highlight as an example the experiences of black and peripheral organizations, contextualizing them with the burning of the monument dedicated to the bandeirante Borba Gato in 2021. Based on a survey of newspaper materials, published interviews, public documents and publications made by the movements themselves in their networks social issues, we will analyze the disputes that take place over double death and the political dilemmas involved in collective memory and political intervention in monuments considered racist and colonial.
