MATURITY MODELS TO ASSESS SMES TOWARDS INDUSTRY 4.0 DEVELOPMENT: REFLECTIONS FOR A RESEARCH AGENDA

The research aims to present a future agenda for maturity model that assess SMEs ability to adapt to the Industry 4.0 development. To this end, a literature review was carried out, using bibliometrics to identify potential elements of Industry 4.0 that can contribute to SMEs, and the main difficulties that will be faced by these businesses in face of the transformations presented by digitalization era. In this way, data compiled from database returned 700 works, and, after applying filters defined to this study, 375 articles were read in depth to develop the research scope. The results list barriers, such as the fact that existing models do not meet SMEs context, and the opportunities since SMEs have difficulties in exploring possible benefits. Furthermore, there are highlighted determinants for successful implementations, in order to contemplate a systemic model for Industry 4.0 in SMEs as well as the points that must be considered to compose new dedicated models to assess SMEs maturity with respect Industry 4.0, such as long-term strategies, and the suggestion of an agenda for future studies.
