Knowledge and practices of older women in preventing cervical cancer

Qualitative research, conducted in a Basic Health Unit, in Parnaiba-PI. The objectives of the study were to describe the knowledge and practices of older women on cervical cancer and to analyze the preventive measures for this kind of cancer. Data were collected through interview and a semi-structured tool, with open questions. The results showed that the older women have an empirical knowledge, due to their social insertion, which determines their practices. It was observed that, when the older women are aware, they adopt self-care measures; there are preventive habits and a better quality of life. It was concluded that a plan is required, both, to stimulate a regular basis for preventive measures and to expands the possibility of better quality of life to the older women.
