This study describes the experience of an educational program for families of neurological sequel patients to prepare them to provide adequate home care. It presents reflections about the hardship experienced by those families and it also introduces strategies employed to promote health. The patient and the family's participation added to the construction of know ledge which became fundamental to better the quality of life and to the appreciate importance of the nurses'function in teaching-learning in order to guide the family in the process of caring for the patient.
