Curricula for vocacional programs

This report was prepared by the Working Committee of the State of São Paulo Department of Education — Health Area, for the purpose of contributing an auxiliary working paper on the vocational portion of the Nursing Technician, to the Curricula Laboratory of the University of Labor of the State of Minas Gerais, responsible for planning suggested Curricula for Vocational Programs (three years of general and vocational education, following completion of eight years of primary education; minimum requirements for such programs are clearly determined by federal laws).

The report was divided into six sections. The first three sections give a general idea of the professional activities which they exercise, personal qualifications necessary, and positions open to them in the health field.

The following sections present the suggested areas of study for their preparation. After many hours of consultation and discussion, the Committee arrived at the' following conclusions:

1) The total number of hours should be at least 3.000.

2) The areas of study should include: Psychology, Ethics Fundamentals of Nursing, Medical—Surgical Nursing, Maternal—child Nursing, Psychiatric nursing, Community Health Nursing, Nursing Administration.

3) Ward Experience — 840 hours.

4) Since federal legislation also allows for the recognition of partial (shorter) preparation in such programs, the Committee sugested the preparation of operating room (scrub) personnel, and health visitors. The last two sections present general program outlines and a list of the basic equipment necessary for the establishment of a Nursing Technician program.

The subject matter necessarily included in all programs of the area of nursing was planned with the help of specialists in education. The Committee is studying the possibility of including it in all programs of the health area.
