In wartime, every hole is a trench

Abstract:

The article discusses the macropolitical environment in Brazil in recent years, involving the attacks that fundamentalist religious groups, new radical right organizations and authoritarian politicians make on the school, to prevent the educational approach to gender and sexuality issues. It shows the importance of the approach, in the school culture, of gender and sexuality issues. It links this approach with education in and for human rights and with the construction of democratic education. It establishes connections between this link and the more general struggles in favor of democracy, insisting that issues of gender and sexuality are more than subjects of study, and are not just questions of the order of customs or morals. Gender and sexuality are structuring issues of political life, involving disputes over the distribution of power.
