Military Ethos and Masculinities in Olympic Sports

Abstract:

The article in question has as its central objective to produce a critical reflection, based on the category of military athletes, about the new processes and forms of sports subjectivity. At the limit, this text intends to indicate approximations and dissonances, tensions and distensions, between the sports and military regimes. To this end, we seek to produce a bibliographical and documentary review, added to some case studies and ethnographic data, starting from the intersectional analysis of three central concepts for this investigation: a) military ethos, b) Olympism and c) masculinity. In this sense, the body of the military athlete is thought of as a point of convergence that helps to understand the process of subjectivation endogenous both to military circles and sports practices, as well as possible fractures in the building of contemporary hegemonic masculinity.
