The politicization of the intimate space in the Chilean feminist May and the #ChileWokeUp movement

Abstract:

The Chilean student feminist movement of May 2018 erupted with force in the streets and across educational institutions. One year later, the social movement #ChileWokeUp of 2019, mobilized millions of people to the streets, demanding a new constitution and the end of the patriarchal society, denouncing the violence exerted by the police and the military against women. This raises the questions of how these young feminists subjectify themselves in relation to feminism and within the framework of these movements, how the intimate space is politicized. This qualitative research was carried out through interviews with young activists. The results show that the feminist political subjectivation of activists develops from unique experiences such as attending marches, performing in public spaces, or daily actions such as questioning different personal practices such as language or interpersonal relationships.
