Gender stereotypes: Perspectives in the craft professions in Portugal

Abstract:

This article explores gender stereotypes in an artisans’ association in Lisbon, through an exploratory study of ethnographic character, the contributions of which explain the origin and transformations of the profession, as well as a set of articulations that categorize the feminine and the masculine. The results reveal the dynamics of the naturalization of roles and the intersectionality of their implications in the sociocultural context. On the one hand, the study shows how inequalities are reaffirmed for women or men, and, on the other hand, discloses the work done by the people involved, aiming at deconstructing those mechanisms and the preconceived ideas that surround them.
