The “dead-but-not-gone girl” archetype in Netflix teen series: dead and voiceless

Abstract:

The goal of this article is to analyze the representation of the dead-but-not-gone girl archetype in two popular Netflix teen series: 13 Reasons Why (2017-2020) and Élite (2018-). To do that, we used a close reading of the first season of each series as a method of analysis. The results point to the representation of inactive female characters who end up being the object of desire -and obsession- of the male ones, who seek answers and/or revenge for their death. In this way, they become a kind of “sender,” a character that motivates or moves the active subject of the storytelling (the boys). Also, being dead, their voice is compromised or conveyed through the speech of other characters. They are voiceless girls who are in the memory and torment the living ones.
