Narratives of women with physical and visual disabilities about their Motherhood

Abstract:

Although, in Brazil, women represent about half of people with disabilities, there is a lack of data on assistance and specific needs of this population in the reproductive phase, making it difficult do formulate public policies. The present study aimed to investigate the particularities of pregnancy - puerperal cycle of women with disabilities. Narratives were collected from six women with disabilities living in Santos, São Vicente and Praia Grande. From the results, it was possible to identify both positive and negative experiences in the delivery and postpartum care of these women, related to the type of assistance they received. The research demonstrated the need for more studies on this topic and brings important contributions to the areas of Rehabilitation and Women´s Health.
