The objective was to analyze the association of perfectionism and mood state with inappropriate eating behaviors (IEB) in artistic gymnastics athletes. Fifty gymnasts, 10 to 15 years of age, took part. The study used the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26), the Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (MPS) and the Brunel Mood Scale (BRUMS) to evaluate IEB, perfectionism and mood state, respectively. Body dissatisfaction was evaluated using the Body Shape Questionnaire. Triceps and subscapular skinfolds were measured to estimate fat percentage. Body dissatisfaction and the percentage of fat were both controlled in statistical analyses. The findings showed no significant association of perfectionism with IEB (p>0.05); however, the second multiple regression model showed a statistically significant relationship with the BRUMS fatigue subscale in EAT-26 scores (F(1, 49)=5.09; p=0.048). It was concluded that although perfectionist conducts do not induce gymnasts to IEB, the sensation of fatigue may predispose these athletes to IEB.
