This paper deals with some aspects that need to be considered in the selection of a mining method. The choice of the method is one of the most important decisions made during the feasibility studies. In the planning stage, the selection is based on the geological, social, geographical and environmental criteria, however, the health and safety conditions must be maintained during the useful life of the mine. The aspects related to the mine stability, ore recovery and maximum productivity must also be considered. Several methods are possible to be applied in mining operation. The decision of the best method is not an easy task, since it depends on a multidisciplinary knowledge and the ability of the mine planners. Therefore, the choice of the mining method is more an art than a science.
