This work presents an integrated methodology to manage runoff excess using a detention basin. Starting with hydrologic models to estimate runoff flow in the drainage basin, one combines empirical and numerical methods (process-based) in an integrated procedure to design the detention basin entailing associated hydraulic structures (e.g. submerged orifice, broad crest spillway).The approach presented also includes recommendations respecting the criteria for detention basin installation such as slope and allowed water depth.The methodology is applied to a synthetic case study, stressing the relevance of empirical methods to obtain preliminary results and the need to apply the numerical method for detailed detention basin design and dynamic-response simulation.
