Abdelmalek Sayad. The migratory project: between uncertainty and illusions

Abstract

According to Abdelmalek Sayad, the realization of the migratory project is defined by the impact of the institutions of the society of the host country and its post-industrialization system on the way of life and the journey of immigrants, from the country of departure to the country of installation. This process is not only part of an institutional, spatial or temporal context, but it is also defined by the family situation, the social condition, the economic aspect and political transformations, both in the society of the country of origin and from that of the host country. This is how uprooting and the syndrome of illusions intersect, to produce in the imagination of displaced people, a state of uncertainty maintained by a dominant/dominated relationship between two politically opposed states. It is from this opposition between “national” and “non-national”, taking into account the legal and political mechanisms and means put in place by state agents, that we must seek to understand the expectations of a project in a society different from that of the country of departure. This observation cannot be studied independently of the changes and transformations of the society of departure and that of the country of settlement. Therefore, the uncertainty and the illusion of the idea of a possible return modifies the very functioning of relationships between members of the family group and/or between generations seeking to avoid the failure or interruption of the migratory adventure. On this subject, A. Sayad recalls that each project is consciously or unconsciously understood in a singular or collective imagination among immigrants absent in two societies.
