Level of intercultural competences in professionals who work with unaccompa-nied migrant minors in Spain

Abstract

Intercultural competence enables people to be able to handle situations in which they face states in which contradictions and differences exist. In the context of unaccompanied migrant minors (UAMM) under the care of the Administration in Spain, a descriptive correlational study was carried out between 2011 and 2022. The aim was to check whether the level of intercultural competencies of people working with UACM improves over the years, stays the same or decreases. For this purpose, data obtained in 2011 (n=334) and 2022 (n=208) were compared, in order to find out if there was a change between the established years. The sample consisted of social work professionals working in child protection centres in different parts of Spain. The results showed that the level of intercultural competencies had decreased in relation to the results obtained in 2011. It was concluded that over the years, the need for specific training on intercultural competencies remained unchanged, which negatively impacts the inclusion processes of UAMM.
