From the illusions of emigrants to the suffering of immigrants: Sayad’s contribution from a gender perspective

Abstract

This article is an acknowledgement of Abdelmalek Sayad’s contribution, by adopting part of the author’s methodological proposal and turning this into a dialogue, with some reflection on Silvia Federici’s feminist criticism. The main aim here is to examine the social transformation resulting from migration while focusing on gender relations as part and parcel of the experience of both emigration and immigration. The re-examining of the “double absence”, from the point of view of women, is developed by retracing the steps back to various territories in Mediterranean Europe, Burkina Faso, Mexico, and the United States. The method used is predominantly qualitative, the research was carried out between 2012 and 2020. The text adopts Sayad’s proposal for an overall reconstruction of the migration process. In this case the critical perspective will take into consideration “state thought” and the capitalist system, as well as a patriarchal social structure.
