Why Not Publish an Editorial

REM was accepted by SciELO in 2001, and for the first time, this journal's EDITORIAL could not be published, on the grounds that there are no bibliographic references. It is good to remember that since 1936, the editorial has always been published.

Upon researching the Editorial theme, the following definition was found (Matos, Talliandre, 2023):

Editorial is a journalistic and opinionated text that serves to present the critical position of a certain group (company, newspaper or management) on the main subjects at the time of publication. It has a formal and standardized language in the cultured norm, with impersonal argumentation. Its structure consists of the presentation of the theme, discussion, reasoning and conclusion.

The New Editorial Manual (Folha de São Paulo, 5th Edition) completes this definition: Editorial is the text that expresses the opinion of a newspaper. At Folha, your style must be both emphatic and balanced. Exaggerated irony, interrogation and exclamation should be avoided. It should concisely present the issue to be addressed, develop the arguments defended by the newspaper, refute opposing opinions and conclude by condensing the position adopted by Folha.

As a matter of fact, since it is an opinion of the magazine, the Editorial does not pass through the reviewer process, but it is of paramount importance, and can be a means of publicizing the objectives of a scientific publication.

The last EDITORIAL, published in SciELO, even earned invitations from similar publications: Since the Editorial "REM celebrates its 87th birthday”, created a deep impression, we would like to make this invitation to you to become our Reviewer or Editorial Committee Member. It is expected that by having you join our team, it would help improve the journal and bring benefits to the scientific community.

Books on the publication of scientific articles (Secaf, 2001), and (Volpato, 2006), do not provide any information on the EDITORIAL theme. Thus, almost 85 years after the first publication of the magazine, this was actually the first time that the Editorial became unavailable to our readers.

We reiterate that an EDITORIAL is not a scientific article, and it is not reviewed by peers. However, to avoid delay, the previous issue of REM was published on the SciELO website without it, but our readers can access it in the REM REVISTA application.
