Characterization of the dairy region in the municipality of Juína - MT, Brazil

Abstract

This study was performed at the dairy region of the municipality of Juína, Mato Grosso, Brazil, with an area of approximately 300 thousand hectares, 216 producers who, according to data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics – IBGE, produced 10.5 million liters of milk, in 2019. The goal is to regionalize and characterize this milk-producing region. To do so, 60 producers were interviewed using a questionnaire. The collected data was compiled and organized into graphics, texts and maps produced using QGIS software. The analysis of these data allowed the dairy region to be regionalized into six Productive Zones, supported by the preterit agglutination of producers. The disparities between these zones were evident, both in terms of production and productivity indices. Given the aspect of greatest concern raised, the following was identified: low productivity, the result of a scenario that involves the precarious situation of pastures; lack of dietary supplementation; low genetic standard of the herd; and mainly, lack of technical assistance. Public and private development agencies need to intervene urgently and effectively in this type of activity. Thus, this research can subsidize interventions and support the development and sustainability of the dairy region, serving as a scientific framework for decision-making.
