SCIENTIFIC CINEMA: THE DEVELOPMENT OF MEDICINE-RELATED IMAGES IN BENEDITO JUNQUEIRA DUARTE’S WORK

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analyze the role of medicine-related images in the development of documentary cinema in Brazil, specifically with regard to the documentary filmmaker Benedito Junqueira Duarte. Scientific cinema was a new visual experience by which Duarte built an important part of his professional career. From 1940 to 1954 documentary films had as their main subject the Brazilian culture, depicting documentaries pertaining to education together with health, public health and urban space themes. From the late 1950s until the late 1960s Duarte began to make documentaries with doctors from different institutions in São Paulo and various national and international laboratories, leading to great repercussion in the field of cardiac surgery, a moment of consolidation in a new field of medical expertise that was being established in the country.
