"Un piccolo pataccio al rio dell'Amazzoni": European piracy and Italian projects on Amazon at the time of the Hispanic Monarchy

In the early seventeenth century, navigators and merchants of different nations attended the waters of the territory now known as Brazilian Amazon, corresponding to the ancient State of Maranhão and Grão-Pará (1621-1770). The objective of this paper is to discuss the relationship between Portugal and Spain with other European competitors in Atlantic scenario using as case study attempts to Tuscany navigation to the north of Portuguese America.
