DISSEMINATION AND INTERNALIZATION OF NEOLIBERALISM IN ARGENTINA: THE ROLE OF THINK TANKS (1983-1999)

Abstract

This article aims to discuss the policies of dissemination and internalization of neoliberalism in Argentina during the 1980s and 1990s. The analysis is based on the work of the think tank Instituto para el Desarrollo Empresarial de la Argentina (IDEA), seeking to understand how it developed strategies to convince the Argentinean society, especially businessmen, that the adoption of the free market was the solution to face the economic crisis and to build a developed and rich country. In the 1990s, with Menem’s government, Argentina adopted the neoliberal prescription, which obtained wide social acceptance from a systematic work of convincing and internalization carried out by associations and think tanks such as IDEA.
