“DO THE REFORMS ENCOURAGE OR PREVENT REVOLUTIONS? THE TITHES OF THE CAPTAINCY OF BAHIA AND THE BAHIA CONJURATION OF 1798”

Abstract

This article analyses the impact of the reforms of D. Rodrigo de Sousa Coutinho in the captaincy of Bahia, at the end of the 18th century, to powerful group, qualified by Luís dos Santos Vilhena like the “corporação dos enteados”. This content integrated the “Conjuração Baiana de 1798” and the dispute over the tithes in the captaincy, which threatened his participation in the public edict. From the outbreak of the 1798, the Portuguese Monarchy undertook compromise solutions with this powerful group while avoided any possibility of disruption of the system of colonial domination.
