BETWEEN CHRISTOTOKOS AND THEÓTOKOS: THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE FIGURE OF MARY IN NESTORIUS OF CONSTANTINOPLE E CIRILO OF ALEXANDRIA (IV-V. CENTURIES)

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the theological controversy that emerged with the advent of devotion to Mary, whose heart of the debate came down to the adoption, or not, to the title of Theotokos, and caused serious political and cultural conflicts in the ekklesia, culminating in the Council of Ephesus (431) in which the bishops Nestorius of Constantinople and Cyril of Alexandria were the protagonists. However, in this case, we specifically do an examination of ecclesiastical texts of Nestorius and the defense of Christotokos, beyond the conceptions of Cyril and the counter-proposal of Theotokos, in order to learn the current Marian doctrine interpreting the written considering the theological schools to which they were affiliates.
