A RESTLESNESS OF HISTORY. ON THE RISE OF HISTORIOGRAPHY IN FRANCE 1940-1990

Abstract

Studies on Theory of History and Historiography have achieved remarkable success in Brazil. However, despite the increasing number of publications and the current vogue of topics stemming from the field of Historiography, this field remains, throughout the world, barely recognized, lacking a strong institutional background. This paper seeks to retrace some forgotten milestones of the rise of historiographical studies among French historians since the World War II. Our aim is twofold: a) to prevent so many French efforts aimed at fostering Historiography and bringing together empirical and theoretical historians from being lost in oblivion; b), but also to denounce how fragile is the current institutional situation of historiographical and theoretical studies both within the French historical school and beyond. Such institutional fragility is today all the more disturbing as it appears overshadowed by the plethora of publications of our times.
