Narrator and psychoanalysis in the diaries of A consciência de Zeno e Os moedeiros falsos

ABSTRACT

This article proposes a comparative analysis between Italo Svevo’s La conscienza di Zeno and André Gide’s Le faux-monnayeurs concerning the use of the diary form as an element that contributes not only to the construction of the novels but also as a formal technique that expresses a literary perspective in the 1920s. To do so, it begins with a brief introduction addressing the issue of novel form, proceeds to provide context for the works under examination for the readership, and finally reflects on how the diary and psychoanalysis form a style in Svevo and Gide that offers a pact with the reader while highlighting both the fictionality of the novels and the relationship between the authors and their protagonists.
