ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study, which is primarily a tribute to the great historian António Manuel Hespanha, is to situate some of his contributions to the knowledge of liberalism in Portugal. The analysis of these contributions allows not only to raise questions on this subject, but also to extend them to the general problematic of liberalism and of historical knowledge itself.
