ABSTRACT
In this article, I present the belly dance scene in São Paulo discussing its artistic status and its means of sustainability. Although globally known, I will focus on the examination of the practice of this dance in its locality. I agree with Roland Robertson’s (1992, 1995) notion of “glocalization,” acknowledging his merit in restoring globalization to its multidimensional reality. The interaction between global and local would prevent the word “ local” f rom defining only a n identity concept, against the “chaos” of modernity, considered dispersive and tending toward homology. Thus, we can think that globally disseminated repertoires can perfect ly encompass local characteristics.
