[Two Petronian episodes in “Ci, Mãe do Mato”: a study on classical reception in Macunaíma

ABSTRACT

This article proposes a study of the reception of classical literature in the chapter “Ci, Mãe do Mato”, from Mário de Andrade’s rhapsody Macunaíma, 1928, particularly of two episodes from Petronius’s Satyricon, the important first-century AD Latin novel: the boy from Pergamum (Sat. 85-87) and Crotona (Sat. 116-141). By examining its structure and content, this analysis explores how they are incorporated into the composition of the chapter through a complex process of adaptation, thereby dissolving the boundaries between Amerindian myth, classical literature, and Brazilian literature.
