ABSTRACT
This paper analyzes the novel Essa gente (2019), by Chico Buarque, as a formulation of an identity dilemma related to Brazil’s social formation. Themes such as the blatancy of the intellectual classes and the use of racial categories are discussed as transpositions of problems typical of Buarque’s work, namely the relationship with the past and the future in a historical process based on repetitions and a frustrated utopia, the shuffling between fiction and reality, and the dilemma of the relationship between “self” and “other”.
