Art as testimony: text, scene and context in Roda viva (1967-1968)

ABSTRACT

In 1967, Chico Buarque was already considered a national idol acclaimed by the Brazilian public. While this guaranteed him a privileged place in the phonographic and television industry, it was also a source of great artistic and professional frustration. At just 23 years old, he made a risky decision and invited director José Celso Martinez Corrêa to direct his first dramaturgical text. In many ways, Roda viva is a milestone in the history Brazilian theater and also in the trajectory the artists of its generation. To analyze it, we take as our starting point the idea of art as testimony in multiple dimensions (text, scene and theater criticism).
