ABSTRACT
In “The ideas out of place”, RobertoSchwarz uses the idea of recognition at definingmoments. Yet, this category is never fullyworked out. Curiously, some of the usages hegives to that concept are similar to those givenby Axel Honneth. So, this paper proposes aconnection between both authors. In order to dothat, first, Schwarz’s essay and some other onesare where he discusses recognition are exposed. After that, a connection between his ideasand Honneth’s recent theory of recognition isposed. Finally, with the eyes turned to Braziliansociety, a reading of the concept of recognitionis proposed, one that accounts for arbitrarinessand class stratification in this country.
